
Distance learning is the norm, yet state university (UASD) professors are on strike, affecting thousands of students around the country. Rector Polanco says the strike affects more than 166,000 students that enrolled in the school year. The government has made millions available to the state university for online classes.
The rector of the university, Emma Polanco said she would be meeting with Minister of Superior Education, Franklin García Fermín and representatives of the professor union (Faprouasd) to reach a consensus.
The professors demand a 40% increase in wages, and that retirees get at least RD$60,000 a month in pension payments.
The union of administrative workers at the UASD (Asodemu) is also demanding wage increases.
Student union at the university demands the government provide students with free computers. As reported, 37,000 UASD students did not re-enroll in the online classes for the first 2021 term.
Employees and teachers at the state university have the best employee conditions in higher education in the Dominican Republic.
The UASD is almost completely subsidized by taxpayer money. Most students do not pay for the classes.
