PLD elects new members of its Central Committee

A dozen or so former officials during the Medina administration were among those most voted to join the Dominican Liberation Party’s leadership echelons. The party had announced the activity sought party renovation after losing its positioning as the leading party in the municipal, congressional and presidential elections in 2020.

The election of the Central Committee members took place on Sunday, 14 February 2021. 164,266 presidents of electoral committees in communities all around the country were registered to vote in 381 voting stations for the 300+ new members of the Central Committee. The Central Committee will now have around 1,000 members.

Next Sunday, 21 February 2021, the Political Committee members will meet to choose 10% of the Central Committee membership, or another 33 additional members. The Political Committee is expected to have around 100 members. It is the decision-making organ of the now second-largest political party in the country.

Then, on Sunday, 7 March, the party leadership will vote to elect the president and the secretary-general of the party.

Among the names of the new members of the Central Committee are Juan Ariel Suero, former minister of Economy; Rafael Paz, former director of the National Competitiveness Council and candidate to senator for the National District; former minister of Youth Robiamny Balcácer; Jhonny Pujols, former deputy director of the National Institute of Student Welfare (Inabie), and Chanel Rosa Chupany, former director of the National Health Service (SNS).

News commentator Altagracia Salazar observed that the election indicates that former President Danilo Medina continues to be in control of the party.
