
President Luis Abinader was at the Ramon de Lara Air Force Base Hospital in San Isidro, eastern Santo Domingo, to be present when Public Health Minister Plutarco Arias vaccinated the first Dominican in the Dominican Republic. The deputy director of the hospital, Air Force internist, Ramón Familia Alcántara was the first physician to receive the inoculation.
The campaign at the Hospital de Lara hospital kickstarts vaccinating in the Dominican Republic. The Vaccination Plan establishes that the 12,500 front line medical staff will be the first to be vaccinated.
The Ramon de Lara Air Force hospital was where the first Covid-19 patient, Italian tourist Claudio Pascualini was hospitalized after he tested positive on 1 March 2020. Pascualini spent 54 days under the care of the hospital before testing negative and returning to Italy.
On the previous evening, President Abinader had been at the Las Americas International Airport to receive the first batch of 20,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines imported directly from India.
Earlier on 15 February, the President had participated in the announcement of the first details on the National Vaccination Plan (#VacunateRD). At that press conference at the Presidential Palace, Abinader did not announce the first vaccines would arrive that evening. When interviewed at Las Americas International Airport, the President admitted to the press that he would not be making date announcements until the actual batches of vaccines arrive.
