
The Dominican Republic has vaccinated 161,827 persons in the first two weeks of the National Vaccination Plan. This includes a record 55,843 persons that were vaccinated on Tuesday, 2 March 2021. Collective Health Deputy Minister Ivelisse Acosta said this is 1% of the Dominican population.
President Luis Abinader is hopeful by 17 March all those 70+ will have been vaccinated. The vaccination now centers on those 70+, some exceptions for those 60+ with comorbidities and pre-school and elementary school teachers. Next will follow those 60 to 70 years. The President is hopeful by the end of June, 80% of Dominicans will have received at least a first dose.
On Wednesday, 3 March, President Luis Abinader accompanied his mother, Sula Corona to get vaccinated at the Sagrado Corazón church in Los Prados. The church is one of many vaccination points set up nationwide to accommodate a population of around 7.8 million.
The Ministry of Public Health announces that as of Wednesday evening (3 March 2021), people will be able to book online appointments to get vaccinated. The appointment engine starts with those 70+ with domiciles in Greater Santo Domingo. Appointments reportedly will become available as of 8pm on the VacunateRD website. As of 4 March, appointments for 70+ persons living in Cibao (North region). As of 5 March, 70+ persons living in the southwestern region can book appointments to get vaccinated. As of 6 March, 70+ persons living in the eastern region can book their appointments for vaccination.
While appointments are convenient, they are not needed. People can just show up at the vaccination centers listed on the Ministry of Public Health VacunateRD website. Vaccinations in the Dominican Republic are only available through Ministry of Public Health authorized vaccination centers that now includes points at universities, social clubs, churches and other areas where people usually congregate.
Those with a Dominican ID (cédula) regardless of whether these are Dominican or foreigner can request the free vaccination. The ID and residence card must be up to date for foreigners.
