
President Luis Abinader, Sports Minister Francisco Camacho and National District Mayor Carolina Mejía were present for the inauguration of the remodeled San Lazaro Sports and Cultural Club in the San Miguel neighborhood of Santo Domingo’s Colonial City.
“Today, with the inauguration of this new sports center we want to convey our support to this club, to these facilities and to the many other clubs spread throughout the country that already have the strong support of the Dominican state,” said the President. He stressed his government will be supporting sports as a way of keeping people healthy.
The renovation included 1,700 new seats in the main sports pavilion, the entire electricity system was revamped, two new scoreboards added with their hoops and backboards meeting International Basketball Federation (FIBA) standards. Two volleyball practice posts were added, bathrooms were renovated and new showers added.
The president of the San Lazaro Sports and Cultural Club, Miltón Díaz thanked the President for making possible the club’s remodeling, “the home of sports in our colonial zone.”
Present for the renovations’ inauguration were sport immortals, basketball players Pepe Rozón and Evaristo Pérez and runner Mariasela Peralta, among others. Abinader was named an honorary member of the club. The renovation is in time for practices for the National District Basketball Tournament set to start on 5 May 2021.
Sports Minister Camacho said the Abinader administration is contributing to renovate 500 sports works and clubs nationwide.
During the event, President Abinader announced that he had named Cooperstown Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez sports advisor to the Executive Branch.
