
President Luis Abinader and the Ministry of Women’s Affairs recognized the contributions of 14 outstanding women with the Medal of Merit. The government held the event in the Carlos Piantini Hall of the National Theater.
Those honored as of Decree 143-21 were:
Education: Quénida Lora; Culture: Inés Páez (Chef Tita); Professional, Science and Technology: Vivian Brache; Municipalist, Aminta Vólquez.
Also, Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Nieves Pappaterra; Inclusion and Equality: Evangelina de la Cruz; Sports: Angélica Cruz Martínez; Community Work: Gilma Taveras; Outstanding Entrepreneur, Eira Tatis Mora.
Likewise, Outstanding Woman Abroad: Lieutenant Colonel Marisol Chalas; Politics: Yadira Henríquez; Health: Edith Ramírez; Labor: Daysi Montero. The government also awarded Sister Guillermina Sensión with a posthumous award that Sister Superior Patria Céspedes received.
The National Theater event featured performances by Miriam Cruz, Johnny Ventura, Xiomara Fortuna, Diomaris La Mala, and the soprano Nathalie Peña Comas.
The government donated a house and pensions to those that were needing these during the ceremony. The government BanReservas donated a vehicle to one of the winners. The government also will be making documentaries and publishing books. Cultural exchange trips were included in the prizes.
The Minister of Women’s Affairs pointed out that on International Women’s Day, and in the current context, it is appropriate to pay tribute to all working women who struggle and have not given up despite the difficulties.
After the ceremony, the awardees attended a lunch at the National Palace hosted by the First Lady, Raquel Arbaje.
