President Luis Abinader announced yesterday the government is in conversations with Encore Repair Services. This American company has been operating in the Las Americas Free Zone for seven years. The government wants to contract the company to repair and assemble tablets, laptops, and notebooks for the public school system.
President Abinader said the company would make a bid to offer the service. Encore Repair Services at present repairs electronic devices for companies abroad. The company has agreed to manufacture the computers, install the operating system, software and repair damaged equipment.
Encore Repair Services operates in two buildings with 182,340 square feet and employs 1,700 at the Las Americas Free Zone.
Education Minister Roberto Furcal said the agreement reduces the digital divide gap. He said the government has already delivered 117,495 devices to students and more of the imported devices are expected soon. The Ministry of Education tender for the purchase abroad of electronic devices has at least 12 legal recourses that protest alleged irregularities in the contracting.
