
Leo, son of legendary Swedish tennis player Bjorn Borg, is in the Dominican Republic to play in the 29th Merengue Tennis Cup (Copa Merengue) that began on Monday, 8 March 2021 at the court of the Mirador del Este Park. The competition ends on 13 March.
By Thursday, 11 March Leo Borg had won his matches and will compete in the semi-finals. Others qualifying were Englishmen Jack Pinnington Jones and Lui Maxted and Slovakian Bor Artnak. In the female category, Czech Linda Fruvhirtova, Canada’s Marina Stakusic, also Gracie Epps and Olivia Lincer advanced to the semi-finals.
The tournament is ranked as a level 2 tournament by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is part of the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors.
Leo Borg says he hopes to be able to make a career playing tennis. He attended the tournament accompanied by his mother, Patricia Ostfeldt, his father and his coach Rikard Billing, as reported in Diario Libre.
The Merengue Cup is followed by the Los Tres Ojos Cup. Both are tournaments for youths. And both are the first international tennis competitions held in the Central American and Caribbean region after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. U18 tennis players from Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States are participating.
The tournaments are organized by the Dominican Tennis Federation that is presided by Persio Maldonado. Maldonado is also president of the Central American and Caribbean Tennis Federation (Cotecc).
