What the heck is the Sports Minister thinking?

The director of the National Volleyball Team, Cristóbal Marte is protesting that of a budget of RD$78 million allocated to Dominican sports federations for preparation of Dominican teams to the Tokyo Olympics and another RD$134 million for the Youth Pan American Games, women’s volleyball was only allocated RD$3 million. He said then RD$75 million is being distributed to the remaining 55%. He says the RD$3 million for the national women’s volleyball team is “laughable,” as reported in Diario Libre. Marte says that the Dominican volleyball team makes up 45% of Dominican elite sports teams to the Olympics.

Marte commended Sports Minister Radhames Camacho for making the money available early. Yet, he protests that so little money is being allotted to prepare the “Queens of the Caribbean” women’s volleyball team. The Dominican Republic women’s volleyball team is ranked 9th in the world and has already qualified to compete in the Tokyo Olympics this summer. The team will be competing in Olympic preparatory matches in Okayama, Japan from 10 to 22 July 2021 and in the League of Nations tournament.

He asks the Dominican Olympic Committee to explain the methodology and technical criteria for distributing the RD$212 million.

Marte runs a private operation that has resulted in the Dominican women’s volleyball team reaching the top 10 rankings in the world.
