Ministry of Interior & Police says firearms sold only to those authorized by the Ministry

To acquire a new arms weapon, or to transfer a weapon authorized to another person in the country, Ministry of Interior & Police authorization is now required.

Interior & Police Minister Jesús (Chú) Vásquez also says that from now on the services related to required psychiatric examinations, clinical laboratories and shooting ranges will be randomly designated. These will be assigned in regards to proximity of the address of the residence indicated by the applicant. Those interested in obtaining permits could bring these certificates from the supplier of their choice in the past to meet the requirement.

Vasquez says that the number of counters for obtaining firearms has been increased from two to 20. The offices are located on the 11th floor of the Governmental Offices building (the Huacal).

The Interior and Police Ministry’s Firearms Control Agency had been closed for three months. Its 52 employees were replaced after the new authorities at the Ministry of Interior & Police said they had detected a mafia that committed serious irregularities when issuing firearms permits. Many of these employees had been on their posts for 6 to 16 years. The agency reopened on Monday, 15 March 2021.
