The Dominican ambassador to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) is of the opinion that the debate on the three grounds for abortion in the Dominican Republic should not be happening.
He said the debate is causing a divide in society over whether or not to decriminalize abortion in the Penal Code. Ambassador Andres L. Mateo said that in today’s world, this discussion is out of place.
Mateo said that in today’s society there is already full awareness of the need for these exceptions.
“The three grounds should not even be discussed. Already in today’s world there is a very generalized awareness of the importance of these three grounds and they do not constitute any type of heresy or violation or lack of faith in religious beliefs,” Mateo said when interviewed for the morning talk program, El Despertador.
He said: “It is clear that these are exceptional situations, profoundly exceptional, and that the fulfillment of these three grounds is part of the knowledge of a reality that science can fully sustain.”
In the Americas, only four other countries do not allow exceptions in their legislation regarding abortions. These are Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Haiti.
