The applicant who was the highest-rated during the assessment for the choice of ombudsman in the Dominican Republic was not included in the final list of candidates being sent to the Senate for choosing. Media reports indicate the PRM deputies instead favor choosing former Frente Amplio politician, Fidel Santana to be the new ombudsman.
When asked, Alfredo Pacheco, president of the Chamber of Deputies, argued that the candidates’ qualifications serve only as references and do not determine the decision to be taken by the committee.
The Chamber of Deputies needs to select groups of six candidates from which the Senate will choose. Likewise, it will present five candidates in the case of the Chamber of Accounts selection.
“After we choose those names, they are sent to the Senate where the final decision will be reached,” said Pacheco.
Deputy Juan Dionisio Restiyuyo had said that he would give a dissenting vote to the report presented by the committee, criticizing that the best rated person in the evaluation was not taken into account for the position of ombudsman and will only be considered as a candidate for deputy ombudsman.
In the case of the Chamber of Accounts, Deputy Rogelio Alfonso Genao Lanza, who presides the committee of deputies in charge of the selection of the aspirants to integrate the Chamber of Accounts, said today that the work was concluded with the selection of five groups of five names that will be presented to the Senate.
“The postponement of the report is basically due to the search for a consensus among the deputies because to be valid, it must have the approval of two-thirds of those present,” said Genao Lanza regarding the Chamber of Accounts shortlists. The Chamber of Deputies postponed the presenting of shortlists for Tuesday, 23 March 2021.
