When the government announced it would be offering health insurance, thousands of government employees protested and affiliated themselves with private providers. Today, the reality is different. The government health provider, Senasa offers the best coverage of all insurance plans.
Santiago Hazim, the new director of the Seguro Nacional de Salud (SeNaSa) says it is the only insurance that has affiliated more than 8,000 physicians. He said Senasa has the most private clinics and hospitals affiliated of all insurance companies. It is also the only one to offer more than RD$1 million in coverage of catastrophic diseases.
Senasa today has over 6,996,000 affiliates, of which 1,200,000 contribute to the plan. The government subsidizes the other affiliates.
Hazim credits his predecessor with the good positioning of the insurance company. “I found an organized institution, I found an institution that was walking, and we are getting it to run,” he explained in the interview with the Grupo Corripio.
Senasa offers full coverage to persons over 70 years of age.
