National Biennial Visual Arts scheduled for May 2021

Culture Minister Carmen Heredia announced that the most important exhibition of visual arts will take place again at the soon to reopen renovated Museum of Modern Art. The biennial is due to be held since 2017. The biennial is in its 29th edition. The winners will receive a cash prize of RD$1 million and there will be nine other winners with cash prizes of RD$300,000. The event is organized by Gamal Michelen, Deputy Minister in charge of Cultural Heritage at the Ministry of Culture. The jurors for the contest are Dominicans Amable Sterling and Plinio Chahín and Puerto Rican Irene Estevez.

In making the announcement Michelen said that the biennial would be open to the general public. The biennial had been programmed to be held in December 2020, but was postponed because of delays in the Museum of Modern Art’s remodeling. Architect Federico Fondeur is the director of the Museum of Modern Art.

Culture Minister Carmen Heredia said that work is being carried out to ensure that all museums can be open for the Easter holidays so those in the capital city can visit these, especially those in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo.
