A Dominican rower to compete in Tokyo Olympics

The Dominican Republic has qualified one boat in the men’s single sculls for the Tokyo Olympic Games in the B-final. 23-year old Ignacio Vasquez Jorge secured one of five berths available at the 2021 FISA Americas Olympic Qualification Regatta that took place 4 to 6 March in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

As reported in El Dia, Vasquez Jorge makes a living as a fisherman in his hometown of Sabana del Puerto, near Bonao in Monseñor Nouel province. The country’s rowing installations are there. The rowing facility was built for the 2003 Pan American Sports Games.

El Dia reports that Vasquez is the son of a fisherman and himself fishes for a living in the evening and trains during the day.

He will compete in the men’s single sculls (single M1X men’s senior category). His coach is Brayan Chalas. He began practicing the sport in 2014. He won his first medal in the Central American and Caribbean Rowing Championship in 2016.
