Higher Education Minister Franklin García announced the schedule for return to in-person learning at Dominican universities and higher education institutions after meeting with university rectors on Monday, 22 March 2021.
According to a press release from the MESCyT, academia will resume in-person learning gradually starting in April. Classes that require special exams, tutorials, lab time, service areas, libraries, research institutes, and graduate programs will be the first to resume as part of a Phase 1.
Phase 2 will begin on 4 May, with hospital rotations, community practices, hands-on learning and community sessions.
The third and last phase will be a hybrid-semi-presential system, depending on the evolution of the pandemic in the country. The date of these phases will be determined by the evolution of the pandemic.
García Fermín will preside a commitee, that includes the president of the Dominican Association of Universities (ADOU), José Alejandro Aybar; the vice-president of the Dominican Association of University Rectors (ADRU), José Hazim Torres; the president of the Association of Universities of the Dominican Republic (AURED), Ricardo Winter; and the vice-minister of the MESCyT, Carmen Evaristo Matías that will follow up the return to in-person learning program. The committee will work in coordination with the Ministry of Public Health.
Higher education in-person classes closed last March when the government ordered a general lockdown. Most of the country has resumed most activities, with the notable exception of education and entertainment sectors.
