24-hour clearance now at Haina Port

The director of the Customs Agency (DGA), Eduardo Sanz Lovaton announced the installation of state of the art X-ray technology at the Port of Haina. He said the Eagle P60-s equipment was donated by the company HIT Puerto Río Haina. The new technology will expedite freight container cargo clearance operations.

HIT invested more than US$3 million in the purchase of an Eagle P60-S drive through inspection system, a state-of-the-art technology equipment that will speed up the inspection of containerized cargo, since trucks will not need to stop for the system to perform the scanning process. With this state-of-the-art equipment, up to 100 containers per hour can be inspected.

Sanz Lovatón says the new technology is in line with the current administration’s efforts to make the institution’s operations more efficient, modern and secure. In addition, this initiative supports the government’s goal of enabling 24-hour container clearance.

“With this donation, we will be in a better position to execute the dual role that we are called to fulfill from the DGA, guaranteeing national security and facilitating foreign trade by raising our logistical efficiency through the implementation of technology,” said the Customs director.

He said the installation of the scanner for the verification of goods at the Port of Río Haina is one more step to position the Dominican Republic as a world-class logistics hub and, with it, guarantee safe and agile international trade.

“Becoming the main and most important logistics hub in the region would position the Dominican Republic as a strategic investment destination, increasing the interest of multinational companies in the country and, therefore, the creating of jobs,” said Sanz Lovatón.

Erik Alma, CEO of HIT Puerto Río Haina, the Haina port operating company, says the donation strengthens the main objective of public-private partnerships, which is that the country benefit from the operations.

A press release from the Customs Agency highlights that the Puerto Río Haina is the most important multipurpose terminal in the Dominican Republic. 60% of the international maritime trade that enters and leaves the country passes through this port terminal. Since its inception as the operating company developing the Río Haina port, HIT has invested more than US$140 million in specific areas such as infrastructure, technology and security, making this port a world-class multipurpose terminal.

The Eagle P60-S scanner allows the truck and container to be thoroughly inspected, regardless of the density of the cargo and its condition, ensuring a safe, efficient and fast inspection by providing a detailed view of the goods inside the container. With the installation of this technology, trucks and cabins are no longer an option for smuggling weapons, drugs and/or people.
