Senate to vote for new ombudsman

The Chamber of Deputies sent the shortlists to the Senatefrom with the names of pre-selected candidates for the nation’s ombudsman. The candidates are politicians Fidel Ernesto Santana (Frente Amplio), Henry Modesto Merán (Fuerza del Pueblo) and Pablo Ulloa Castillo, former executive director of the Constitutional Court.

The Chamber of Deputies says the shortlist of alternates are Roberto Carlos Quiroz, Ana Josefa Felipe and María Aurelia Genao.

The civic society watchdog organization, Citizen Participation (PC) has called for the ombudsman’s election to comply with the law. PC highlights that the ombudsman law is clear in stating that the position is not open to politicians. Santana and Meran had high-profile political affiliations at the time they opted for the position.
