Ministry of Public Health alerts new upward trend for virus transmissibility

The Covid-19 advisor of the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Eddy Pérez Then, explained that the country registers a “slight increase” in the transmissibility of Covid-19. Dr. Pérez urged people to keep the protective measures of physical distancing, mask-wearing, keeping in areas with good ventilation, and hand hygiene.

Dr. Perez Then said that the rate of transmissibility of the COVID-19 virus, that is to say the number of people that an infected person can infect, increased this week, going from 1.5 to 2.5.

The Ministry of Public Health is concerned. Dr. Perez Then explained that the transmissibility of the virus reflects the mobility of the population. He said it is a thermometer and a red flag for what could come next if the transmissibility’s upward trend continues throughout the Easter holidays.

Director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Ronald Skewes also expresses concern that the positivity rate has stagnated for the past four weeks. As of Bulletin 370 of 23 March 2021, the 4-week positivity rate was at 10.85.

For Easter, the Health Cabinet has maintained the same curfew that has resulted in a decline in cases, except for an extension of two hours on Good Friday and a ban on consumption and sale of alcoholic beverages on 2, 3, 4 April.
