Capital city government ready to go ahead with converting Lincoln and Churchill avenues into single lane roads

The National District’s city government is inviting to a public hearing on the proposal to turn Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill avenues into one-way avenues. Public transport would be improved on these avenues. The plan is to reduce traffic congestion.

On Friday, 26 March 26 at 10am in the Emilio Rodríguez Demorizi Session Hall, the public hearing will be at the Mayor’s Office headquarters.

The Mayor’s Office ordinance proposes that traffic on Winston Churchill Avenue and its extension Enrique Jiménez Moya will circulate from the South (George Washington Avenue/ Malecón) to the North (John F. Kennedy Avenue). While on Abraham Lincoln Avenue, traffic will circulate from the North (John F. Kennedy Avenue) to the South (George Washington Avenue/ Malecón). The city government also proposes that Andres Julio Aybar Street, from Lope de Vega Avenue to Winston Churchill Avenue, will be one-way from East to West. At the present time, the intersection of Andrés Julio Aybar and Abraham Lincoln is very congested due to major construction on that corner of two 20-floor hotel towers.

In preparation, the city government has already carried out 38 road direction changes in the capital city polygon where the two avenues are the main north-south connections.

A National Institute of Transit and Transport (Intrant) study indicates that it takes 59 minutes to travel from the Malecón to JF Kennedy on the Abraham Lincoln. The change in direction would reduce the travel time to 13 minutes, according to simulations carried out by Intrant.

The same study indicates that by turning the Winston Churchill into one way, the travel time to cross the avenue north south would be reduced from 80 minutes to 21 minutes.
