President Abinader travels to Spain on Sunday for Iberoamerican Summit

President Luis Abinader plans to travel to Spain and Andorra on Sunday, 18 April 2021. It will be his second trip abroad. His first was to Puerto Rico for the inaugural of Puerto Rican governor Pedro Pierluisi in January 2021.

President Abinader will participate in the 27th Iberoamerican Summit in Andorra on 20 and 21 April. The Dominican Republic is the scheduled host of the next Iberoamerican Summit. That meeting is set for late 2022. President Abinader will accept the next temporary secretary-general of the organization that gathers 18 Iberoamerican nations. Also attending in person are representatives of Guatemala and the host country, Andorra. The other nations will participate in online working sessions.

Jose Ignacio Paliza, Administrative Minister of the Presidency said that during the stopover in Spain, President Abinader will meet with the King of Spain, Don Felipe de Borbón and the president of Spain, Pedro Sanchez. He will also hold meetings with Spanish business people and members of the Dominican community in Spain.

An estimated 200,000 Dominicans live in Spain. Spain is also the second country in the volume of remittances sent by Dominican nationals. Spain is the fourth-largest foreign investor in the Dominican Republic with around EUR1.7 billion invested most in the tourism sector. Trade between both countries is more than EUR2.67 billion a year.

He is traveling with Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez, Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ignacio Paliza, and the Press Office director, Daniel García Archibald.
