Conflict of interest in garbage disposition and other government appointments?

The media has been covering the debate between Domingo Contreras, the former responsible for waste disposal policy in the Dominican Republic, Dominicana Limpia, and the new incumbent in charge of similar projects Neney Cabrera. Abinader appointed him minister in charge of Strategic Projects and Special Programs of the Presidency. Among these is the management of garbage disposal sites in the country.

Neney Cabrera has gone public calling his predecessor, Domingo Contreras, an example of a great failure. Domingo Contreras has highlighted that Cabrera was already a major beneficiary of municipal garbage disposal solutions and points to irregularities in their management.

Meanwhile, N Digital points out how the government is appointing business people that may have major conflicts of interests that could become a “major headache” for President Luis Abinader.

In addition to Neney Cabrera, she mentions the cases of former Minister of Public Health Plutarco Arias; today Minister of Public Health Daniel Rivera, both major shareholders of the Unión Médica in Santiago. She also mentions Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz is a major agriculture businessman with big investments in plantain production. The limelight has also been on Rafael Arias, formerly a high-ranking Conatra transport executive, who was named to lead the National Institute of Ground Transport and Transit (Intrant). Conatra has already benefitted with a major transport route and unionized taxi drivers are giving Uber a hard time in the Punta Cana region. The unionized taxi drivers charge much more than Uber.
