The president of the Academy of Sciences in the Dominican Republic, Luis Scheker Ortiz joined voices in favor of instating the three grounds for abortion in the Penal Code. Schecker made the statement when visiting protestors that have camped out in front of the Presidential Palace. Schecker says that the three grounds are in harmony with the Dominican Constitution.
The protest groups are camped out in front of the Presidency because when today President Luis Abinader was campaigning for President, he offered his support to the three grounds. Now, he favors that a referendum decide the matter. Furthermore, the today Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) had been in favor of the three grounds when opposition. Today, as the ruling party, the PRM has taken an ambiguous position, siding with religious groups that do not accept the three grounds.
