National District senator Faride Raful (PRM) says that most senators are against the including of the globally accepted three grounds for abortion in the Dominican Penal Code. She says that if the deputies pass the Code without the three grounds, she will do all possible to get the Senate to include these.
She said so far, 17 of the 32 senators have manifested themselves against the grounds.
On the positive side, she says that many of the members of the Justice Committee of the Senate in charge of reviewing the Penal Code are in favor of the exceptions for abortion in the cases when the life of the mother is in danger, in case of rape or incest, and if the fetus is incompatible with life.
She said lots of work is needed to raise the awareness of the reason for the three grounds among the legislators.
The members of the Senate Committee that will study the Penal Code bill after its approval by the deputies are: Antonio Taveras Guzman (PRM); Santiago Jose Zorrilla (PRM), Pedro Catrain (PRM); Felix Bautista (FP); Faride Raful (PRM); Jose del Castillo Saviñon (PLD); Aris Yvan Lorenzo (PLD); and Dionis Sanchez (FP).
Raful made these statements when interviewed for El Día broadcast on Telesistema, Channel 11.
Raful won the National District senate seat campaigning openly for the three grounds. Her closest opponent had all the support of the religious groups and the past government but lost to Raful.
