US raises no travel level to DR because of Covid

The spread of Covid-19 in the Dominican Republic has been relatively stable in the Dominican Republic even when almost complete mobility is back. Nationwide, the positivity rate is 10.62%. The focus of the disease is primarily in Greater Santo Domingo and Santiago, the two largest urban centers. In the rest of the country, the disease spread is well below 5%.

Covid-19 parameters for the country are well below those for the United States. In the Dominican Republic, the 1M death toll is 314. The statistic compares to 1,752 deathes per 1M for the United States.

Yet, the US State Department has upped the no travel warning to level 4. The US State Department Dominican Republic Travel Advisory states: “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 4 Travel Health Notice for the Dominican Republic due to COVID-19, indicating a very high level of COVID-19 in the country.”

The increase in the warning comes when Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil chose Punta Cana for a tour of its Kooza show. Cirque du Soleil has only programmed other shows for Las Vegas for July and Orlando, Florida in the fall.

Likewise, international travel is recovering fast as tourists spread the good word on their vacations in the Dominican Republic.
