Abinader announces Iberoamerican economy and finance ministers conference for May

After an intense four-day travel to Europe to attend the 27th Iberoamerican Summit and receive the hosting of the event next year, President Luis Abinader announced he will convene an urgent meeting of the Iberoamerican community this coming May.

In a press conference at the Las Americas International Airport, President Abinader wrapped up efforts during the visit to attract investments and strengthen relations with other nations.

He then announced that he had agreed with the head of government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, to summon the Iberoamerican ministers of Economy and Finance, to an emergency meeting in Santo Domingo this coming 24 May.

The secretary-general of the Iberoamerican Summit, Rebeca Grynspan will travel to Santo Domingo next 20 May to prepare the conference.

“As I said when I received the presidency of the Iberoamerican Conference, we will work tirelessly so that, on the basis of our differences and similarities, we can advance towards a fair and sustainable Iberoamerica,” said Abinader.

He said that during his recent trip to Spain and Andorra, he had the opportunity to dine with King Felipe VI at the Royal Palace of El Pardo, and met with the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, at the Moncloa Palace. With them he reviewed the main issues on the bilateral agenda. He said together they reviewed the situation in the region, including the events in Haiti.

“I had the opportunity to meet with a large group of the most important Spanish businessmen from diverse sectors such as hotels, construction, pharmaceuticals, finance and aviation, I spoke to them about the benefits of investing in the Dominican Republic,” he added. He spoke of his experience attending the 13th Ibero-American Business Meeting, which was attended by 300 businessmen in person and 1,000 online.

He highlighted that during this meeting, several businessmen of the region were recognized for their outstanding performances, among them, Santiago Hazim, director of the National Health Insurance (SENASA), entity that received a gold medal in the XXI edition of the Ibero-American Quality Award 2020.

He also highlighted that during this forum, the Dominican Employers’ Confederation (COPARDOM), received the the responsibility of organizing the next business meeting in the country in 2022.

The summit in Andorra was attended by King Felipe VI, in his capacity as head of state of Spain, as well as the heads of state of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei; of Spain, Pedro Sánchez and of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Other participants included the head of government of Andorra, the host Xavier Espot, the Prime Minister of Portugal, Antonio Costa, and the Secretary-General of the Ibero-American Conference, Rebeca Grynspan.

The Presidency reported that almost all the presidents of the 19 Latin American nations were connected by teleconference.
