Ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) senator Tonti Rutinel Domínguez is lobbying to split Santo Domingo province into two. The municipalities of Santo Domingo East, Boca Chica and Guerra, on the east side would be left as Santo Domingo province. The proposal is to separate the municipalities of Los Alcarrizos, Pedro Brand and Santo Domingo North and Santo Domingo West as the new Matías Ramón Mella province.
Municipal law expert Waldys Taveras says this is totally wrong and is just a bid to create more government jobs for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) members. He said the province would get a governor, a senator, a Central Electoral Office, and other pertinent offices at a high cost to taxpayers. Taveras is the director of municipal affairs for the PRM.
