Bidding is on for two power plants and gas terminal in Manzanillo Port area

Energy Minister Antonio Almonte says that around 60 national and foreign companies have shown interest in participating in the major project for the port, power generation and gas terminal at Manzanillo Port, in northwestern Dominican Republic.

He clarified that the government is not going to invest a single penny in this project. He said the government seeks to attract private enterprises to invest in the construction and operation of the plants.

The international public tender is for the two natural gas generation plants for 800 net megawatts and a natural gas terminal in Manzanillo, Montecristi province in the northwest. At present, the country’s natural gas storage and production plants are in the south of the country.

Located at the most northwestern coast of the country, Manzanillo Port is closer to the United States, a major supplier of natural gas.

The Ministry of Energy & Mines announced a 30-day extension to 20 May 2021 of the deadline for pre-registry for the tender. The call to participate in the tender was made on 12 March.

In the first meetings, the organization, definition of regulations, protocols, appointment of specialized experts, advisors and the participation of a body of qualified independent observers to guarantee the highest levels of transparency and participation were announced.

In addition to Almonte, the bidding committee is integrated by Pedro Silverio, economic advisor to the Presidency of the Republic; Andrés Astacio, executive vice-president of the EDEs; Delmis Marte Hichez, in charge of the Office of Free Access to Information of the MEM and Matilde Balcácer, legal director.
