
Four Dominicans that had their eyes on winning slots to the Tokyo Olympics in the 29th Pan American Weightlifting Championships achieved their goals. The event was held in the Dominican Republic 18-25 April 2021. The foreign athletes were lodged at the Hodelpa Emotions in Juan Dolio and competed in the event at the Parque del Este weightlifting pavilion in eastern Santo Domingo.
The event was the last qualifier for the Tokyo Summer Olympics. The competition was rescheduled from 2020.
Two Dominican women, Crismery Santana (87 kg) and Verónica Saladín (+87 kg), and two Dominican men, Zacarías Bonnat (81 kg) and Luis García (56 kg) received Olympic slots. Also on the Dominican weightlifting team to Tokyo are women weightlifters Cándida Vásquez and Dahiana Ortiz.
During the competitions, 26-year old Crismery Santana set a new Pan American record.
Colombia won the event in the men’s division and the United States in the women’s division. Competitors from 29 nations from the Americas participated in the event.
