Prosecutors Yeni Berenice Reynoso and Radhames Camacho, chief of the Anti-Corruption Prosecution Agency (Pepca), led Operation Coral and the arrest of Major General Adam Benoni Cáceres Silvestre and his girlfriend Rossy Guzmán Sánchez. Cáceres is the former chief of the military aide corps of former President Danilo Medina. Guzmán is accused of serving as a front for Cáceres.
The prosecutors acted on evidence of irregularities first known to the general public after aired by Nuria Piera in her investigative journalism show. Piera presented evidence on how the major general became a prosperous businessman while employed as the chief of the military corps of the former head of government.
Both Cáceres and Guzmán had sat for interrogations by the prosecutors on several occasions. Before the arrest, 27 raids in the National District and Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macorís, Monte Plata and Samaná provinces were carried out by the prosecutors to gather evidence in the case.
The prosecutors investigated the wealth and many businesses acquired by Major General Cáceres and his ties with Rossy Guzmán, who is a pastor of an evangelical church.
Others arrested in Operation Coral are Police colonel Rafael Núñez de Aza, Police lieutenant colonel Raúl Alejandro Girón Jiménez and pastor Tanner Antonio Flete Guzmán. The prosecutors accuse the arrested of being part of an administrative corruption ring with major private enterprises, asset laundering, fraud, and illegal possession of firearms.
Cáceres, Núñez and Girón were all members of the security corps of former President Danilo Medina.
Altagracia Salazar in her 6am morning news wrap-up for 26 April 2021 says that her sources indicate that one of the arrested, an assistant of Major General Cáceres had seven vehicles in his home, including three Tesla.
Charles Marriotti, secretary general of the former ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), described the arrests as part of “a media show” to discredit the accomplishments of the past government.
