Government cuts funding of Don Bosco children’s program in half

Father Enrique Castillo, who directs the “Boys and Girls with Don Bosco” child welfare program, told El Dia that the program is struggling, after the Abinader administration reduced its budget from RD$40 million to RD$20 million. Castillo says they would have needed RD$60 million to carry out their plans to help children in need.

Father Castillo says that lots of government funds allotted to children in the Dominican Republic are lost in red tape. He criticized the government institutions in charge of children welfare. “The resources are not going where they should, they are lost in the red tape and management and are not reaching their target,” he said.

Father Castillo is speaking up on occasion that April is the global National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Castillo said there is lots of negligence on behalf of the parents and lots of violence in disciplining. He is also critical of the media, making the point it is contributing to the culture of violence.
