An Olympic Games boxing qualifying tournament had been scheduled for Argentina from 10 to 16 May 2020. The event was canceled and never rescheduled. The International Boxing Federation decided the 53 quota places that would have been available at the World Olympic Qualifier be assigned based on rankings instead, with the best-ranked boxer per region, per weight category receiving a Tokyo 2020 berth.
This turned out to be good news for Dominican boxers. Five Dominican men boxers and two Dominican women qualified for the Japan summer Olympics.
The Dominican team is: Rodrigo Marte (52 kg), Alexis de la Cruz (58 kg), Leonel de los Santos (63 kg), Rohan Polanco (69 kg) and Euri Cedeño (75 kg). Also in the women’s division, Miguelina Hernández (51 kg) and Maria Moronta (69 kg). Armando Hernandez is the coach.
Hernandez said the good participation of the Dominican team in the Central American & Caribbean Games, the Pan American Games and the World Boxing Championships made the difference. The team has been training in Samana and has done altitude training in Colombia.
