After seven years of construction, Ciudad Sanitaria gets rolling; Abinader alerts of a spike of Covid in Greater Santo Domingo

President Luis Abinader was at the Ciudad Sanitaria Luis Eduardo Aybar (Morgan) for the formal delivery of new facilities at the medical center, the largest in the country. The maternal (B1) and child care (B2), security, and forensic pathology are in operation.

During his participation in the event, President Luis Abinader said new hospitalization units have been allocated to treat Covid-19 patients. He urged Dominicans to maintain preventive measures now that the statistics indicate there is an increase in cases in Greater Santo Domingo. The national 4-week positivity rate is 12.03%. The number of reported active Covid cases increased to 40,232, up (+456) from the previous 24 hours.

The center opened 60 beds in the intensive care unit of which around 36 will be used to attend Covid-19 patients, said Dr. Mario Lama, director of the National Health Service (SNS) who attended the opening of the new facilities at the Ciudad Sanitaria. Dr. Lama says that the government is also making available an additional 20 to 25 ICU beds at the Cecanot public hospital to care for Covid-19 patients.

The Ciudad Sanitaria Luis Eduardo Aybar is located in the María Auxiliadora sector of the National District. The new areas add another 114 beds for general hospitalization and another 16 in the intensive care unit. The hospital has 57 beds in its neonatal intensive care unit.

The Ciudad Sanitaria has new imaging and cardiology diagnostics area. It also has the largest laboratory and the largest dialysis station in the country.

The Ciudad Sanitaria is a teaching hospital with 80 beds to house resident physicians, three classrooms, auditorium, multipurpose room, library, and operating rooms with virtual interaction and telemedicine equipment.

75% of the investment in the hospital renovations were carried out during the past Medina administration.
