Months after the Presidency announced an agreement with an affiliate of the bus company Conatra for the installation of a modern bus service on the north-south-north route of the Núñez de Cáceres in Santo Domingo, passengers and former transporters protest the high cost of the service. The service was instated some four months ago. Passengers protest because the new service is very expensive at RD$35 the fare.
The new bus service is a pilot of other routes that would be converted in the future, under a scheme unfolded by the Transport and Transit Institute (Intrant).
Motorcyclists associated as Asomonuca, a cheap transport alternative, protested yesterday. They are being forcibly evicted from the route. Conchos (multi-fare paying taxis) earlier were impeded from offering their services on the route. Government Omsa buses that charged RD$15 are also gone. The eradication of competition leaves foot commuters with the option of walking or taking the RD$35 bus.
