Brownies lady fined RD$500,000

The First Court of Permanent Attention of the National District judge ordered 27-year-old Ninoska Brito Montero to pay a fine of RD$500,000 and appear periodically before the judge. Judge Lisa Veras did not order Brito Montero to jail, but said the woman will not be able to leave the country. Brito Montero told the judge she had sent the brownies to attract attention to the plight of the campers.

Brito Montero is accused of sending the gift package with brownies laced with marijuana to the protestors that were camped out in front of the Presidential Palace demanding President Luis Abinader back the decriminalizing of abortion. President Abinader, when campaigning for president, had backed the three grounds for abortion. Today he favors instead that a referendum decide the issue.

The brownies intoxicated around 12 people who were at the camp when the gift arrived by delivery service. Among these was a journalist, a cameraman and the driver of a TV news program.

Laura Castellano, legal representative of the three grounds for abortion cause, said that the defense is satisfied with the judge’s ruling. While Sergia Galván, spokesperson for the campers, asked the authorities to investigate the case more thoroughly.
