Illegal agriculture continues in Valle Nuevo

A report in Diario Libre by Marvin Cid on 27 May 2021 focuses on how illegal agriculture continues in the La Vega mountain area of Valle Nuevo National Park. Francisco Domínguez Brito when serving as minister of Environment agriculture in 2016 had ordered the end to farming in the national park area. Under his mandate, most of the farming in the northern part of the park was eradicated, not so in the southern part when his successor, Angel Estévez gave preference to farming activities. The national park area is where many of the rivers that irrigate the country are born.

Environmental activist Andres Ferrer denounces that large farm businesses illegally occupy the national park areas, despite the orders for the farming to stop. The illegal farm operations have invested millions to channel these waters for their farms’ profit.
