Remembering Antonio Guzmán and how he dealt with the rule of the military

Dominican media and social media are drawing parallels between the present vandalism that has affected the Las Americas International Airport and similar episodes during the Antonio Guzmán government (1978-80). The late President Guzmán is credited with having put an end to the military stronghold he inherited after defeating long-standing President Joaquín Balaguer in 1978.

Recently, the Attorney General Office began investigating former head of the Specialized Security Corps of the Presidency (Cusep), Major General Adan Cáceres. Cáceres was sent to jail after evidence was found of his heading a major network involving the military, police and religious persons. One of the accused in the Operation Coral case presently under investigation, Army Major Raúl Alejandro Girón Jiménez spoke during the pre-trial hearing giving extensive insights into widespread corruption that he said continues to prevail in the military and police.

Hoy reports that the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic and the Ministry of Defense are directly taking over the investigations of the vandalism that occurred last Sunday, 23 May 2021 affecting the airport’s runway lighting system.
