The Attorney General Office issued a statement over the weekend thanking the public for the concern for the safety of prosecutors. “The prosecutors who contribute their time and expertise to the fight against administrative corruption are aware of the challenges they face and continue to work without any incident or action having stopped their investigations in the different cases under investigation,” stated the notice issued on Sunday, 30 May 2021.
The notice was issued after the media coverage of a suspected attempt against the life of prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso.
“In the last few days the Public Prosecutor’s Office detected actions that compromised the security of proceedings being carried out in the context of Operation Coral,” said the statement signed by Attorney General Miriam German Brito. “However, these are under investigation and, therefore, any information to the public will be handled in a timely and prudent manner to avoid hindering the investigations,” states the note.
Operation Coral is an investigation into a major military, police and religious network that drained billions in government resources for the profiteering of persons with close ties to the past Medina administration. Major General Adán Cáceres, the former director of the Presidential Security Corps (Cusep), is in jail at Najayo as he awaits the hearings on accusations he was the head of the network investigated in the Operation Coral.
“We must be grateful for the interest of the citizens, journalists and the media in safeguarding a task that, like the fight against corruption, concerns us all,” reads the note from the Attorney General Office.
The Attorney General Office confirmed that the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption (Pepca) continues their work, under the direction of the deputy prosecutors Yeni Berenice Reynoso and Wilson Camacho and with a whole team committed to a Dominican Republic without impunity.
Meanwhile, on a related topic, journalist Altagracia Salazar warned of meetings of high-ranking military with legislators as part of the campaign to reinstate special military courts and jails for military and police officials in the Penal Code now under review. The Constitutional Court has ruled against the privilege. Salazar says the effort has the backing of the incumbent Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Luciano Díaz Morfa who has officially made the request for the amendment.
