Taking time to remember, not to repeat the tragedy of Trujillo

President Luis Abinader spoke at a government-sponsored event to commemorate the victims of the Trujillo dictatorship. The events marked the 60th anniversary of the murder of the cruel dictator. On 29 May 2021, President Abinader called for the entire Dominican society to join the national silence in homage to the people who offered their lives against Trujillo’s regime.

An open-air exhibition that covers the years of the dictatorship was inaugurated in the esplanade of the plaza located at the southern end of the Centro de los Heroes government building complex off the Malecón.

The Presidency issued Decree 335-21 declaring 30 May, the anniversary of the execution of dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo as “Freedom Day.” The government has organized several activities on occasion of the 60th anniversary of this event and the beginning of the start of the end of the dictatorial regime.

Several media have shared content to remind Dominicans of the horrors of the regime.

Meanwhile, the Dominican Resistance Museum called for funding to continue their efforts to create awareness of the serious crimes committed during the regime. The museum is demanding that the Ministry of Education disburse the funds allocated to the museum in the Ministry of Education budget.
