
Legislation that would create a national system of zoning laws governing land use has been sitting in National Congress for 16 years. El Caribe reporters say the lawmakers are playing a “game of legislative ping-pong” and call for something to be done. Several attempts to get the legislation on the agenda have lapsed, usually after a year or so of “study.”
At the present time, the legislation is under consideration by a joint committee chaired by ruling party senator Faride Raful (PRM-National District). The legislation is aimed at controlling land use for such things as housing developments or schools and hospitals and farmlands. The legislation covers national parks and other protected areas.
