Government conditions continuing talks with Haiti over irrigation canal

Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Alvarez and Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ignacio Paliza announced the government would not sit down for talks as part of the Haiti-Dominican Republic Technical Bilateral Commission until construction stops on the Masacre River irrigation canal under construction by the Haitian government. The announcement followed a meeting with President Luis Abinader on 31 May 2021.

Alvarez said that since April 2021, the Ministry of Foreign Relations has requested the interruption of the construction so that the Haiti-Dominican Mixed Bilateral Commission could discuss this.

The request was later made when the commission met to discuss the construction. The Haitian authorities have not responded to the request.

The Dominican Republic has put on the table the construction of new dams in the Dominican Republic.
