
The Customs Agency announced the start of the ambitious initiative for shipments to clear freight cargo in 24 hours. The initiative promises fast dispatch of merchandise. The Customs Agency is implementing the program to enhance the competitiveness of the Dominican Republic in the region. The Customs Agency seeks to turn the Dominican Republic into a global logistics hub.
The director of Customs, Eduardo Sanz Lovaton said that before starting the project in January 2021, only 322 companies were dispatching their cargo in 24 hours and that today, the number has risen to 946, a 193% growth in just four months. He forecast that by the end of the year, 2,000 companies will be dispatching in 24 hours.
Sanz Lovatón reported that May closed with tax collections of RD$15 billion. He expects Customs tax collections to reach RD$68 billion by the end of 2021.
President Luis Abinader was present for the official start of the program on 1 June 2021. Speaking at the event, he highlighted that January to May 2021 Customs revenues surpassed RD$65 billion that is 22.22% more than those for the same period in the pre-pandemic year of 2019. He said exports are up 10.31% compared to 2019.
“Between January and May Customs revenues exceeded RD$65 billion equivalent to an increase of 49% compared to the same period of 2020 and 22.22% of 2019. “Total DR exports from January to April have grown 22.9%, 2019 growth is 19.46%, while exports have grown 20.92% 2020 and 10.31 2019”, said Abinader.
