President of the Republic Luis Abinader advanced on 1 June 2021 speaking to the press that the three main suspects of the sabotage to the runway lighting system at the Las Americas International Airport have not yet been arrested. The President says five people are investigated of which two are already in custody. He said that the military who was in charge of the area had left an hour before the incident, without reporting he was leaving. He also is in custody and is investigated. President Abinader did not give names. He said the incidents reveal the are serious flaws in the security system at the airport.
