Despite the spread of Covid-19 in the country, the number of vaccine doses administered in the Dominican Republic has been consistently declining, according to Our World in Data statistics. From a peak daily vaccination of 109,363 on 16 May 2021, the numbers of doses have declined to 66,515 persons who were vaccinated on Monday, 31 May 2021.
As a result, the Abinader administration has decided to open more vaccination centers and send out mobile vaccination trucks to barrios to reach out to the people. The Presidency has organized a major vaccination effort for 3, 4, 5 and 6 June in Greater Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Azua and Peravia provinces.
As of the 1 June 2021 deadline, the University of Virginia Covid-19 Surveillance Dashboard indicates that 3,223,950 persons have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in the Dominican Republic and 1,087,424 persons had received two doses, around 13% of the target population over 18 years old.
As of 2 June, the country had received 5,646,000 vials of vaccine. These are distributed in AstraZeneca (328,400), Sinovac/Coronavac (5,268,000) and Sinopharm (50,000).
The Presidency reported the first batches of around 200,000 Pfizer vaccines are scheduled to arrive 11 June 2021. These vaccines are primarily targeted to be used for school children. The government also expects another batch of 1 million Sinovac vaccines this month.
