
The Dominican Republic defeated Nicaragua 13-3 on Wednesday, 2 June 2021 during its third game in the Florida WBSC Baseball Americas Qualifier for the Tokyo Olympics. The win means the country passes to the second round of games.
Previously, the DR had defeated Puerto Rico 5-2, but then lost to the United States 8-6 on Tuesday, 1 June.
The Olympic baseball qualifier offers a slot to the Tokyo Olympics (21 July-8 August). The second and third place winners that will be decided in the second round will then compete in the WBSC Final Qualifier, scheduled to take place in Puebla, Mexico 22-27 June. That event is the last chance at making the Tokyo Olympics.
Teams that have already qualified for the baseball competition in the Olympic Games are Japan, Israel, Mexico and South Korea.
The Americas Qualifier runs through 5 June and the teams are split into two groups. The Dominican Republic, ranked 10th in the world, is in Group A playing the world’s second-ranked team, the United States, No. 11 ranked Puerto Rico and No. 15 ranked Nicaragua. The teams in Group B are No. 7 Cuba, No. 8 Venezuela, No. 13 Canada and No. 14 Colombia.
