Mourning on Tuesday for anti-Trujillo activist Leandro Guzmán

President Luis Abinader declared official mourning (Decree 363-21) on Tuesday, 8 June 2021 to celebrate the life of Leandro Guzman Rodríguez. He passed away on Saturday, 5 June 2021 at the age of 89. He was a founding member of the 14 June Movement, an movement that combatted the Trujillo regime.

Guzmán Rodríguez was the husband of María Teresa Mirabal. Both were legendary anti-Trujillo activists. The United Nations declared Anti-Violence Against Women’s Day on 25 November in honor of María Teresa Mirabal and her sisters, murdered shortly after visiting their husbands who were in jail by order of dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.

“That Leandro Guzmán Rodríguez was an outstanding activist and fighter for the respect of the fundamental rights and dignity of the Dominican people, as well as a defender of democratic ideals and resistance against authoritarianism, as he demonstrated in his opposition to the tyrannical regime of dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo,” states the decree.

Article 2 of the decree establishes that the national flag must be flown at half-mast on Tuesday, 8 June 2021 in military precincts and public buildings throughout the country.
