Unicef telethon raises RD$3 million

Dominicans contributed RD$3,267,000 to the children’s causes of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) in the Dominican Republic. Unicef organized the fundraiser, Grand Telethon “Together for Children” on Sunday, 13 June 2021, to support the UN agency social programs in the country.

Unicef director Rosa Rosa Elcarte explained that the pandemic has resulted in job losses to vulnerable families, with consequences of increased malnutrition in children under five years, pregnant and lactating women. The telethon resources will be directed to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, improving quality of education, aiding the return to in-person learning for all students in a safe manner. Funds will also be allotted to programs to prevent violence against children, detect and treat acute child malnutrition and reduce teenage pregnancy and early unions of girls with adults.

“We want to thank the entire society that has mobilized on this day for children, through their supportive donations. We have the opportunity to put the rights of children first, and even more so in this context in which we live due to Covid-19. To achieve this we need everyone’s support, so we invite you to visit the Unicef website and continue donating to support us in our commitment and social work,” added Cristina Alonso, Unicef corporate alliances specialist.
