
In a night-long gala on Tuesday, 15 June 2021, the Dominican Republic recognized the best in show business for 2019 and 2020. The Soberano Awards take place in March of every year, but the Dominican Oscars-like ceremony was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The winners of the Grand Soberano were Niní Cáffaro for 2019 and Romeo Santos for 2020.
Highlights of the event also were the awards to centenarian radio broadcaster and actress Maria Cristina Camilo; to Jose Antonio Molina, director of the National Symphony Orchestra; to Dominican comedian Felipe Polanco. The long career of merengue band leader Josie Esteban was honored with a special award. The Covid-19 medical teams were honored with a special award received by Dr. Felix Cruz Jiminián.
Juan Luis Guerra performed “Rosalia” on the Teatro La Fiesta stage to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his album “Bachata Rosa.”
