Mass vaccination campaign in southern and eastern provinces this weekend

The Ministry of Public Health is betting on vaccines to beat the pandemic. Dr. Eddy Perez Then, advisor to the Minister of Public Health on Covid-19, says that 70% of those that have required intensive care in Dominican hospitals had not been vaccinated when catching the disease. He said the other 30% had received only one dose. Perez Then urges Dominicans to get vaccinated. The Ministry of Public Health has purchased inventories of the vaccine that are available at vaccination stations nationwide.

Dr. Perez Then said that a study carried out from 31 May 31 to 8 June proves the positive impact of the vaccines. He urged those who have not yet been vaccinated to get their doses to reduce the positivity rate and avoid the complications from the disease.

“The vaccine continues to be the best balm we have right now to prevent complications and even death. This is very important, and the population must understand this. We urge all those people who have not yet been vaccinated to go to the centers indicated to be able to mitigate the impact that this Covid-19 disease is causing,” said Perez Then. The expert insisted that people should continue to take care of themselves, using masks, keeping their distance and washing their hands constantly.

So far, more than two million people here, or 30% of the Dominican adult population has received the two doses of vaccinations. More than six million people have received at least one dose.

Yet, the number of vaccines applied has again begun to slide after climbing to a record number of Covid-19 vaccine jabs for the 10 June 2021 deadline. From the peak of 184,208 on 10 June, by 15 June the daily numbers of persons vaccinated have declined to 116,651. The goal of the health authorities is to maintain a pace of 100,000 inoculations a day through August 2021. A batch of 1.5 million Sinovac/Coronavac vaccines arrived this week to continue with the vaccination plan.

This weekend, the Ministry of Public Health is taking a mass vaccination campaign to the southern and eastern provinces. The campaign is bringing vaccination stations closer to people to make it even easier to get vaccinated.

The aim is to inoculate approximately 1.2 million people in 16 provinces in the South and East over the weekend. The target provinces are El Seibo, La Altagracia, Hato Mayor, La Romana, and San Pedro de Macorís in the East. And San Cristóbal, Peravia (Baní), Azua, San José de Ocoa, San Juan de la Maguana, Bahoruco, Independencia, Barahona, Elías Piña and Pedernales in the South.

The Ministry of Public Health had carried out the first mass vaccination campaign 3-6 June 2021, reaching populations in Greater Santo Domingo and nearby San Cristobal.

The Ministry of Public Health has stocks of Sinovac/Coronavac vaccines and Pfizer for children. Pfizer has been available for adults requesting the vaccine.
