The president of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen), Fanny Carolina Salinas Fernandez, said Thursday, 17 June 2021 when visiting in Santo Domingo that for one of its members to lose parliamentary immunity, a request from the Supreme Court of Justice of the defendant’s country needs to be made.
“At this moment we do not have any resolution, no order that has come from a Supreme Court of Justice,” she stated regarding statements made by a leader of the Frente Amplio political party in which he requests the regional body strip former President Danilo Medina (2012-2020) of his parliamentary immunity, so that he can answer for alleged irregularities in his administration.
The presidents and vice presidents of Central American and the Dominican Republic, members of the Central American inter-regional system (SICA) automatically become members of the Parlacen once leaving office. Medina and Cedeño were sworn to the Parlacen on 20 November 2020 for a four-year term.
Frente Amplio congressman Juan Dionisio Rodríguez said recently that the former president “is aware of his responsibility and that explains why he has taken refuge” in the Parlacen.
Several brothers and sisters and brothers-in-law of President Danilo Medina and his former security chief have been indicted in the corruption files (Operación Anti-Pulpo and. Operación Coral) that are being heard in ordinary Dominican courts. Former President Danilo Medina has not been included in the accusations made by the team under Specialized Administrative Corruption Prosecutors (Pepca).
News analyst Diana Lora said on “Esta Noche con Mariasela” TV varietyshow that it is unlikely the Supreme Court of Justice will make the request. The current president of the Supreme Court of Justice, Luis Henry Molina was named during the administration of former President Danilo Medina. At the time, he was known for meritory work during his term at the National School of the Magistracy, but also as an active political campaigner for Medina.
